Remodeling my Moms bathroom

Today I started the dubious task of remodeling my Moms 5'x7' bathroom.

There are several problems.
1. There was never a vent or fan to help get rid of the moisture, so the paint is peeling and there is mold.
2. There was once a drop ceiling and the grid was never removed and all rusty.
3. When the tiler did his job he had to take out part of the wall behind the faucet. He put in a piece of Sheetrock that was too thick for the existing plaster and then taped and mudded to "smooth" it out but really just made a big warp or roll in the wall. He also laid on way too much mud.
4. There is a cabinet above the toilet that is worn out.
5. The vanity is old and worn out with a 40 year old countertop in baby blue.
7. The walls are painted strawberry mousse pink over crusty wallpaper paste that was never removed.
8. The floor is peel and stick tile in faux pink granite.

The first stage plan:
1. Scrap the paint on the ceiling and walls. DONE
2. Scrap the mud around the tile in the shower. DONE
3. Take down the rusty ceiling tile grid. ALMOST DONE
4. Sand down the walls to a smooth texture.
5. Use KILZ to seal out the surface mold and provide a clean surface for painting.
6. Paint the walls a light mossy green.

The second stage plan:
1. Tear out tile floor.
2. Tear out vanity.
3. Possible remove the toilet.
4. Tile the floor and put in new toilet.
5. Install vanity and countertop.
6. Paint cabinet over the toilet white.
7. Install new mirrored medicine cabinet
8. Install Hollywood vanity light bar.
9. Install a vent fan to the outside.

Result the bathroom my Momma has been dreaming of!

  1. Sounds like this Bathroom just needs to be gutted back to the studs and started over. Would probably be easier.
